Whether you have received the exam results you had hoped for or not, there are a whole host of options for you to consider, including further studies or taking the first step onto the career ladder. This list is by no means exhaustive, but gives you a taste of the variety of choices you have.Apprenticeship/Training Schemes
If you want to continue studying, but don’t feel University or College is for you, then an apprentice and traineeship might be ideal. They offer the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the workplace at the same time. Many companies, including ourselves at Lovewell Blake still have opportunities for apprentices or trainees to join the team this summer or autumn. Companies will list the opportunities on their websites
or job boards with details of how to apply. If you have a Company that you are particularly interested in, and they don’t have anything on offer, contact them directly contact them and express your interest, so you are kept in mind for future opportunities that may arise. College/University Clearance
It’s not too late to secure your place at college or university for the 2017/2018 academic years. If you hadn’t applied but have now decided this is the pathway you want, or maybe your grades haven’t quite secured the place you wanted, clearance is a great option, and could get you started on that course next month. It provides an opportunity to consider different courses or universities which you may have previously discounted. The UCAS website
provides further information on how to go about applying via clearance.Gap Years
Taking a year out after completing your studies can provide opportunities to gain valuable life and work experience. You could use a gap year to travel the world before continuing your education or embarking on your chosen career route. The experiences you encounter will be a great way to demonstrate to future interviewers your ability to adapt to new environments, and take on new challenges.
During a gap year you can also take the time to really consider your next steps and weigh up your options. Many companies will start the application process for their summer 2018 intake of apprentices/trainees in the autumn/winter of 2017. At Lovewell Blake we open our application process in October, with an assessment centre held in February.
If you do decide to take a gap year, it’s also a great time to gain some work experience. This can enhance your CV ready for future applications, as well as experiencing first hand different roles and work places to help you get a feel for careers you have in mind. Most companies are more than happy to accommodate work experience. Make sure you give them plenty of notice, and remember to send a covering letter detailing why you would like to carry out work experience with them and what area of the business you would like to be placed within.
